摘要

The emergence of fast, non-volatile memory fundamentally changes the role of storage devices in computer systems for a wide range of applications, especially for data-intensive applications. Providing an easy and safe interface for users to efficiently utilize the power of new storage devices as well as other computing resource in the system becomes increasingly important. In this talk, I will share our experience in developing an easy, safe, generic programing interface, Willow, for modern SSDs. Due to the limitation of current in-storage processing power, the system still requires heterogeneous types of processing units including CPUs, GPUs, or hardware accelerators to efficiently process data. Data transfer among these devices becomes an overhead of applications. This talk will also discuss the benefits of using a storage-centric data transfer model that directly sends data from/to storage devices and other peripherals in the high-performance computing platform.

BIO

Hung-Wei Tseng is a postdoctoral researcher for the Non-volatile Systems Laboratory of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of California, San Diego working with Professor Steven Swanson. He is currently working on the next-generation storage systems for data-intensive application. He got his PhD in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of California, San Diego. His thesis work, “Data-triggered threads” was selected by IEEE Micro "Top Picks from Computer Architecture" in 2012.
