This talk focuses on the application of NLP to researches of Informetrics and explores the potential of NLP for humanities and Social Science (HSS) research fields. The basic concepts related to Informetrics will be introduced firstly which will be followed by the major issue of this talk: citation analysis. Four kinds of Author co-citation analyses (ACA), Traditional ACA (TACA), Distance ACA (DACA), Sentence-Similarity ACA (SACA), and Paragraph-Similarity ACA (PACA), will be discussed one by one in details. A series of experiments based on the four ACAs will be presented and the results will be discussed. Thirdly, how authors cite references will be explored by analyzing parts of speech of in-text citations. The trend of the citing behaviors will be uncovered. Finally, the applications of NLP to Humanities and Social Science (HSS) are elaborated from viewpoints of humanists and social scientists.

Kuang-hua Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. He received his B.S. in 1986, M.S. in 1991, and Ph.D. of Computer Science in 1996, all from National Taiwan University. He joined the Department of Library and Information Science at National Taiwan University in 1996. Currently, he is a full professor and the University Librarian of National Taiwan University. His research interests are Information Retrieval and Evaluation, Citation Analysis and Evaluation, Natural Language Processing, Digital Archives and Digital Humanities, and Intelligent Information Systems. He has published more than 140 research papers, 4 book titles, 5 patents, and other publications. He is the president of Interlibrary Cooperation Association, Taiwan, the Executive Director of Taiwan Association for Digital Humanities, Chair of Taiwan OCLC Governing Members Consortium, and Chair of Asia-Pacific Regional Council of OCLC. In addition to teaching, research, administration, and professional services, he fulfills a lot of government services and has been invited as the consultants for many government agencies as well. He has won a few awards including NTU research awards and NSC MERIT Award, National Science Council, Taiwan.
