摘要

Although metaphors have been extensively researched in the past, kind metaphors (X is a kind of Y) have not been the focus of research, or, to some extent, they are not considered as metaphors. In this talk, we will show what kind metaphors are and how they work as metaphors. Unlike the source and target domains of conceptual metaphors that contain designated or expected level of conceptualization, kind metaphors set no restriction on the specificity of domains. Yet, like most metaphors, kind metaphors contain two concepts that are related by a language user to achieve a certain discourse effect. Kind metaphors are often intentionally created to explain somethingin terms of another. In the first part of this talk, kind metaphors and their corpus examples will be shown. In the second half of this talk, the identification of kind metaphor and linking to ConceptNet will be presented.
